Dr. Paul Mason

Dr. Paul Mason is an award-winning cartoonist, lecturer, and animation concept designer.  

Paul writes and illustrates for Frew Publications on THE PHANTOM comic books. He illustrated the all-ages KID PHANTOM series, as well as on THE PHANTOM: TREASURES OF DRAKON boardgame. He has also written and illustrated for Gestalt Comics, on titles such as THE ELDRITCH KID: BONE WAR, TALGARD, and his creator-owned comic FLOCK. 

Paul’s story for the 2019 Phantom Annual was the first full-length Phantom story both written and illustrated by an Australian cartoonist, and was awarded a Bronze Ledger by the Comic Arts Awards of Australia in 2020. Paul was also the recipient of the 2022 Stanley Award from the Australian Cartoonists Association for Comic Book Artist of the Year, and was an animation finalist for his concept designs for the ABC co-produced animated TV series THE DEEP

Paul has been a Lecturer for the Griffith Film School for over a decade, teaching storyboarding, art direction, animation pre-production, comics, and visual storytelling as part of the Bachelor of Animation program. He was awarded the 2022 Student Experience of Teaching Commendation for the 2021 Academic year.   

Paul’s art has been publicly displayed in international exhibitions, including the Jilin International Animation Festival in China, and the 2022 Australian Comics exhibition in Bangkok Thailand, in partnership with the Australian Embassy. He has also appeared on ABC Radio National, presented for the Queensland Writers Centre, the Brisbane Writers Festival, the University of Southern Queensland, the State Library of Queensland, The Sydney Opera House for their Graphic Festival, and GOMA QLD for the opening of their Marvel Cinematic Universe Exhibition.
